What is the law surrounding online surveys and those under sixteen years of age?

Hello. I have been "accidentally sampled" (i.e. approached by an online questionnaire asking for my opinion) twice. I begin to answer the question, when I give my age as 15 years old, it says "sorry, under sixteens cannot partake in our survey" – why does that happen?

   It’s not illegal to answer a survey at any age, you’re just not in the age group they’re looking for. Take a survey about Twilight or something, then you’ll be in the right age group.

   Might not make a lot of sense to you though. You might not even like Twilight, and you might be perfectly suited for answering questions for an older targeted survey, it doesn’t matter to the surveyors.

   But it could be that the survey you are taking will give you an offer later which only certain age groups can receive. I would have mentioned that first, but you can’t contract with a person under 18 so I have no idea why they include 17 year-olds… The same goes for surveys that might touch on adult themes. Maybe it applies to driving and R rated movies?

   I can think of two reasons. One, just to protect themselves. Children and the internet typically lead to trouble.

   Two – unless the survey is for a company that directs advertising to young teenagers, the company may not care what you think.
